Communication- Adding EQ
Adding EQ Content
- Share more of your personal perspective
- Voice more of your internal dialogue (more EQ) :
- the immediate, internal responses/feelings/emotions.
- how you feel, how you connect to what they’re saying or you’re saying
- those quick, initial EQ impulses/reactions that are happening internally that you’re skipping over
- Try to look for and voice some of those before jumping to IQ
Include yourself more often in the information you’re sharing
- Your feelings, your perspective, your beliefs, your viewpoint, etc.
Tools to Add EQ:
- Tell them “WHY”
- why they should care / why X matters / why the data is important / why you recommend/propose/suggest X / why they should invest / why they are there / etc..
- Give examples, analogies, tell mini-stories
- Say “imagine” or “for example” more often
- Keep the examples clean and clear. Careful not to add too many details.
- Just give the high-level pieces that paint the picture
- Give a data point, then give an example they can connect to or an analogy that paints the picture
Homework:
-
Try and think of some stories, analogies and/or examples for concepts you explain a lot
-
Integrate more EQ language into work-related content (data, facts, info)
-
Think about and practice different examples & analogies to illustrate your points
- Try to tell/give at least one example, “imagine”, or analogy in every meeting
