Communication- Gestures
GESTURES:
-
Get the hands moving as you speak
-
Use your gestures to help the listener (show and tell them simultaneously)
-
Hand autonomy — try to move them independently (not just together and in sync)
-
Place information purposefully around you — remember where it is (consistency for listener)
-
Keep the spine sturdy (can twist around spine, but avoid collapsing)
-
Shoot for mostly palm down gestures for now
Use hands to:
- Show numbers - anytime you mention a number and can show it on fingers
- Example: You have 3 options / there are 2 main points / there are 3 major values / etc.
- Show connection and/or distinction between topics
- Example: You have two options — option A, option B (separate with hands)
- Show scale
- Example: is 20% a lot or a little?
- Is “7 years” a long time or a short time?
- Show positive/negative or incentivizing/de-incentivizing
